Everyone knows about the Peanuts Holiday Classics, which are staple traditions for many Americans, but did you know about the countless non-holiday themed cartoon specials?
There are more than thirty animated Peanuts specials, my favorite of which is Snoopy’s Reunion, which was released in May of 1991.
The episode opens on a dark and stormy night that gives way and fades into a bright, fresh, spring morning. And it is revealed that a puppy has just had her litter, as they nurse on her, one lone puppy gets up and runs to join its littermates: this is Snoopy.
After the farmer congratulates the mother, Missy, on her litter of healthy pups, the antics of Snoopy and his littermates begin alongside a country music backing track.
We see an ADORABLE montage of the pups as they grow up, playing together, grabbing food from their seemingly “all you can eat” puppy buffet before eating together as a family before they stand up and get their instruments. Andy, one of the siblings, cutely stumbles while setting up his drum set, Olaf gives a few huffs on his jug, Spike and Molly run their bows over the strings of their fiddles, and Snoopy, on the acoustic guitar, and Rover, on the steel guitar, tune together.
After a quick count-off from the clumsy, yet rhythmically talented, Andy, Snoopy begins the family’s song with a riff on his guitar, which is echoed by Marbles on the banjo, before Spike leads the rest of the band into a symphony of country music.
We all knew Snoopy was an ace pilot, but who knew he was a fantastic guitar player as well?
We look across the whole family band, which includes Marbles on banjo, Snoopy on guitar, Olaf on jug, Spike on the fiddle, Belle on mandolin, Rover on steel guitar, Molly on the second fiddle, and Andy on drums.
They play along in happy harmony, even as Olaf accidentally swallows a fly, but that doesn’t stop them.
As the pups play together, we see the farmer begin to paint a sign… puppies for sale.
Missy follows the farmer outside to the bottom of the hill and watches as he pounds the sign into the dirt. Her puppy’s band ends their song on a sour note, indicative of what’s to come.
As Missy stands staring at the sign, she sheds a tear. Her litter, scared, runs up to her, and they shed a tear in unison, knowing that the time together the band of pups have is coming to an end.
But this is only the beginning of Snoopy’s story. When watching the episode, find out what Charlie Brown’s life was like before he got Snoopy, who Snoopy’s first owner was why she had to give him up, and what Snoopy’s siblings are up to now that they’re grown up.
This heartwarming episode where Charlie and Sally help a depressed Snoopy reach out to his siblings so they can “get the band back together” and return to the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm makes me smile on any rainy day and gives you the perfect dose of the internet’s favorite “little guy”. But most importantly, it always reminds me that it doesn’t matter what you have or where you are, it only matters that you are in the company of the ones you love most.
