Michael Gambon, actor of Dumbledore in “Harry Potter”, has died at age 82. His death came after he had been struggling with pneumonia. He passed peacefully at the hospital with his wife and son by his side.
Gambon was born in Dublin and moved to London as a child. He attended school at the Royal Academy of Dramatic art. He began his career in acting when he joined the theater. After some time in the local theater in Dublin, he was offered an opportunity to join the National Theatre Company. Gambon’s career in acting in bigger theater productions and on screen, television, roles grew from there.
Gambon’s most known role was Dumbledore in the “Harry Potter” movies beginning with “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” and continuing through the final film “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”
He also has acted in “Paddington” one and two, “Hail, Caesar!”, “Little Women” “Doctor Who”, and many more. During his time as an actor he won many Best Actor awards at the British Academy Television Awards and was nominated for two Emmy awards.
He retired from acting in 2015 when it became difficult for him to remember his lines due to memory loss. He spoke on this at the time of his retirement: “It’s a horrible thing to admit, but I can’t do it. It breaks my heart.”
James Phelps, who played Fred Wesley in “Harry Potter”, took to social media to remember one of his favorite memories of Gambon during their time filming together. Gambon helped Phelps prepare for a reading he had the following weekend and shared the knowledge he had gained during his career with him.
Michael Gambon is survived by his wife, Anne and his son, Fergus. They ask for privacy during this time.
