Indie pop musician Ricky Montgomery stopped in Toronto at the Danforth Music Hall on March 1st for his 13th stop of the Another Rick in the Wall tour. The concert featured songs from his new album “Rick” that was released late last year. “Rick” is Montgomery’s first album in seven whole years, so this tour was hugely anticipated among fans to finally see new Ricky songs live.
With the venue being a smaller building you could really feel the energy from the fans, and Ricky himself. During songs like “Line Without a Hook,” “Get Used to It,” and “This December” it felt like a small earthquake of passion hit the music hall. The small venue would also help lead to some amazing moments between Ricky and the audience. He got us up and jumping, waving our arms in sync, lighting up the room with our lights, and just nice little interactions you would not see in a larger setting.
Ricky treated us to an unreleased song that he says is coming soon. (Considering it took seven years for his album to come out I’m not holding my breath) Ricky instructed the crowd during “Unknown Phantom” the unreleased song, to sway their hands and sing “ba, ba, ba, ba” like a sheep. It was a silly request but when the part of the song came on it was amazing and a really great moment to be a part of.
Ricky closed with my favorite song “This December,” and his most popular song “Mr. Loverman.” He came out with rejuvenated energy after a short break and sent us home rocking. The concert was a load of fun. Being so close to Ricky and other fans made the show so much more special.
