The last time Ricky Montgomery released an album was his debut album “Montgomery Ricky” in 2016. Since then Ricky Montgomery has released 11 EPs/singles under the indie pop genre, however, as his music progressed, his lyrics began to take on a more serious meaning. With his newest album “Rick” that released September 29th of this year, he brings 14 new songs and 40 whole minutes of Ricky Montgomery goodness.
The vibe of “Rick” is the same range we have come to expect from classic Ricky Montgomery songs, with very bouncy, energetic songs, to sad songs that you can still vibe to, and, of course, the sad songs that make you bawl your eyes out.
I think the standout songs on this album are “Boy Toy,” “Don’t Say That, “Sometimes I Need to Be Alone,” and “Black Fins.”
They complement each other so beautifully, as all the songs on the album do. Each song seamlessly flows into the next without changing the mood or vibe the listener is feeling. The vibes, as described before, are fully powered up as you go from a song like “Boy Toy,” which is a very peppy and happy song, into “Truth or Dare,” which is a sadder song lyrically. It somehow makes you forget that and you just want to sway to the music.
I have two big problems with this album. Those being the two interludes/the outro, and that some of the songs are just awful. Touching quickly on the interludes/the outro, I really hate interludes. I think they are a waste of a track and do not have any positives to including them, same with the outro. Now onto the awful songs, which there are only two of. “Eraser,” and ‘Ethan’s Song” are just hard to listen to. With “Eraser,” I am not quite sure what it is, but it just does not sound pleasing to my ears. I am sure that it is good musically and lyrically, but something about the music is too high to me. “Ethan’s Song,” on the other hand, feels like a bad 1960’s recording. It is grainy, and every word feels as if it takes hours to say, when the song is only 1:49 long. I think this is by far Ricky Montgomery’s worst song.
With the bad out of the way, I think this is a must listen to if you like indie pop or just pop at all. “Rick” gives us Ricky Montgomery fans something we have been craving for, for almost 7 years.
