Looking for a new option for cooling off this summer? Robert Morris University’s “Broadway and the Gardens” may be the answer.
Dr. Ken Gargaro, coordinator of theater at RMU, announced in a press release from the university that both The Fantasticks, Broadway’s longest running musical, and Music Man will be performed at the newly, renovated, air-conditioned Colonial Theater in Massey Hall in July.
According to the press release, Gargaro’s objective for the summer series is to “provide a family friendly, reasonably priced, comfortable indoor and outdoor summer entertainment experience that gets one away from the summer heat.”
In each succeeding year, the plan is to increase the number of shows.
RMU students and staff will make up the casts of each show with Gargaro serving as the director for The Fantasticks and Barbara Burgess-Lefebvre, a communications professor at RMU, serving as the director for Music Man.
In addition to the surrounding communities of Moon, Sewickly, Robinson and Beaver, Gargaro hopes to attract an audience from the central communities as well.
“The fragrances the audience encounters on entering the theatre and the cool sunset outside at intermission will be worth the trip to the country,” stated Gargaro in the press release.
The Fantasticks opens on Saturday, July 18 at 2 p.m. and Music Man opens on Wednesday, July 25 at 8 p.m.
