Legendary broadcaster Bill Hillgrove is retiring from his role as the Pittsburgh Steelers broadcaster. Hillgrove was in his role for thirty seasons and is finally calling it a career. He will still be calling University of Pittsburgh sports and is not retiring completely.
Hillgrove was picked by the Steelers to be the radio play-by-play person in 1994 and Hillgrove never looked back. Hillgrove has had the opportunity to call nearly five hundred games, thirty-five playoff games, and four Super Bowls in his illustrious career.
A 1958 graduate of Central Catholic High School, Hillgrove attended Duquesne University and also worked for WTAE-TV and WQED-TV, as well as several radio stations in the city. He began broadcasting Pitt basketball games in 1968 and started broadcasting Pitt football games in 1970.
Hillgrove bleeds Pittsburgh as he is the most iconic voice in the city’s history. Hillgrove lived and breathed Pittsburgh and dedicated his entire career to Pittsburgh. From calling local high school games to being on TV to calling college sports to the Steelers, Hillgrove dedicated his entire career to the city of Pittsburgh.
Hillgrove was recognized in 2007 when he won the Chris Schneckel Award given by the National Football League Foundation. Later in 2020, he was inducted into the Central Catholic Hall of Fame. Thank you Bill Hillgrove for dedicating your life and career to the city of Pittsburgh. A legendary voice and person who will live on forever in the steel city.
