Bobi, the oldest dog in recorded history has passed away after living a miraculously long life of 31 years. His owner, Leonel Costa, announced on Monday that Bobi had died over the weekend in a veterinary hospital.
Bobi was born on May 11, 1992, and lived his life on a farm in the small village of Conqueiros, Portugal. Bobi spent the majority of his time enjoying the company of several feline friends who will surely miss him.
Bobi was a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo which is a dog used to guard livestock. The breed has an average life expectancy of 12-14 years, Bobi lived more than double that.
The Guinness Book of World Records certified his age earlier this year. The previous Guinness World Record holder for the longest-living dog was an Australian Cattle Dog named Bluey who lived to be 29.
The Guinness Book of World Records released a statement on Monday saying they were “saddened to learn of the death of Bobi, the world’s oldest dog ever.”
Bobi’s record-shattering life almost never happened. He was the sole surviving member of an abandoned litter of puppies.
Bobi garnered quite a following over the years with over 100 people attending his 31st birthday party.
Costa attributed Bobi’s longevity to a “calm, peaceful” environment and his exclusive diet of human food rinsed off with water to remove excess seasonings. Bobi was also never leashed or chained, he had free range of the farm and the surrounding area.
