The Carnegie Science Center has announced that it will be renaming itself to the Daniel G. and Carole L. Kamin Science Center. This decision comes in light of a generous donation of $65 million made by Daniel and Carole Kamin.
“Dan and Carole have been generous supporters of our museums for many years, and with this unprecedented gift they are further establishing their legacy as true leaders in Pittsburgh’s philanthropic community,” stated President and CEO of Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh Steven Knapp. This is the largest gift the Carnegie Institute has received since its founding in 1895.
Daniel Kamin, 82, is a commercial real estate entrepreneur and owner of Kamin Realty Management. His wife Carole, is an emeritus member of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History advisory board and a longstanding member of Carnegie Museum of Art’s Women’s Committee.
Kamin visited the precursor to the Carnegie Science Center, the Buhl Planetarium, and the Institute of Popular Science, as a youngster which helped to foster his love of science. He also built his own telescope as a teenager.
“The Science Center is a vital contributor to the economic vitality of the Pittsburgh region and a great partner to our schools and science-based businesses. Carole and I were inspired by the future vision of presented by the Science Center’s leadership, and we felt compelled to support it in a meaningful way,” Kamin said in a statement.
The gift will greatly assist the science center in increasing its endowment and strengthen its role in science education. The Kamin Science Center will remain one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.
