KANSAS CITY — At least one Kansas City Chiefs fan won’t be watching the season opener on Thursday as a Kansas City Chiefs superfan was sentenced to 17 years behind bars.
Xavier Michael Babudar – a.k.a. ChiefsAholic – was sentenced on Sept 5 to 17 and a half years in federal prison for a string of bank robberies occurring across seven states from 2022 to 2023.
Prosecutors allege that Babudar committed these robberies and laundered the money at casinos – whose bounties added up to roughly $850,000 – in order to pay for the vast expenses of his fandom, including flights, tickets, and memorabilia.
Babudar was originally arrested in Oklahoma in December 2022, and he was eventually released on bond and went under home arrest with an ankle monitor.
Later, in March of 2023, Babudar was arrested in Sacramento after removing his ankle monitor and – once again – robbing banks and laundering the money. Babudar was then re-arrested and his bond was set at $1 million.
Babudar was tried this week, and the conclusion of the case came with a plea deal from the defense, which defense attorney Matthew Merryman told NBC was “a fair and just outcome”.
As of Sept 5, Babudar was sentenced to 210 months (roughly 17.5 years) in a medium-security federal prison.
