At approximately 8:30 pm on Tuesday, a fire broke out on the roof of the G-Tower of Washington Hall. A spokesperson said that an air conditioning unit on the roof was the cause of the fire. Maintenance was seen working on the roof of Washington Hall earlier in the day. The dorm building currently houses more than 300 students, but only 40 were in the building at the time due to spring break.
Water and smoke damage was being reported on the fourth floor as a result of the fire. Students who lived in G-tower were not able to stay in the building due to the damage, but they were able to grab their belongings and they are being relocated for the time being. The fire was contained to the fourth floor of the tower and no one was hurt. Local news crews KDKA and WPXI were on the scene as well.
As this is an ongoing situation, RMU is asking all students to avoid the G-Tower of Washington Hall, as crews are still assessing the situation. The residence life staff will be communicating with all of those who were impacted.
