Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin Kraus announced Tuesday that he was forced to terminate a deputy who tested positive for cocaine after responding to the hours-long standoff that left the Garfield neighborhood paralyzed with fear.
Law enforcement exchanged thousands of rounds of gunfire with the suspect, James Hardison, during the standoff which ended in his death.
The deputy was a part of the sheriff’s office for seven years. Sheriff Kraus stated that it is standard procedure for deputies to be drug tested in the aftermath of an incident in which they use their firearms.
“We have a strict, zero-tolerance, drug-free work policy. It’s very frustrating, This deputy was a very good employee but if you have illicit drugs in your system, it’s automatic termination,” Kraus stated.
“I hope he gets the assistance he needs and gets back on the right track,” Kraus said.
The name of the terminated deputy has not yet been released nor have any charges have been pressed against him.
It is unknown whether he was under the influence of the drug at the time of the incident, but he was not acting strangely that day.
