Oldmans Township, NJ: On Aug 29, 2024, NHL All-Star Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and his brother Matthew, 29, were struck by a drunk driver while riding their bicycles late in the night. The brothers were struck when a car operated by Sean Higgins attempted to pass two other cars, traveling the same road.
According to an affidavit filed with the Salem County Superior Court Higgins had consumed five to six beers before operating the vehicle, and had an open alcohol container in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Higgins has been charged with two counts of death by auto, reckless driving, possession of an open container, and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle. Higgins appeared in court on Aug. 30, where he did not enter a plea: he is scheduled to have a hearing take place on Sept. 5.
The Gaudreau brothers were set to be groomsmen at their sister’s wedding in Philadelphia on Aug 30.
Their uncle, Jim Gaudreau, said, “Last night we lost two husbands, two fathers, two sons, two brothers, two sons and brothers-in-law, two nephews, two cousins, two family members, two teammates, two friends but truly two amazing humans”
The hockey world has come out in masses to support the Gaudreau families during their time of grief. The Columbus Blue Jackets, Johnny Gaudreau’s team issued a statement.
Many of his current and former teammates have also come out in support. Fans are encouraged to place flowers or memorabilia outside of both Scotiabank Saddledome and Nationwide Arena, the two NHL arenas where Gaudreau spent his career. There is also a GoFundMe to support Matthew’s wife and their unborn child to help with the financial burdens during this time
