Former President Donald Trump was indicted for a third time on Tuesday with charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States of America and prevent the peaceful transfer of power.
The indictment states that Trump perpetrated “A conspiracy to defraud the United States by using dishonesty, fraud, and deceit to impair, obstruct, and defeat the lawful federal government function by which the results of the presidential election are collected, counted, and certified by the federal government.”
Trump has also been charged with conspiracy to corruptly obstruct and impede the January 6 congressional proceeding.
“The purpose of the conspiracy was to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election by using knowingly false claims of election fraud to obstruct the government function by which those results are collected, counted, and certified,” the indictment from Special Counsel Jack Smith declares.
This is a significant historic event as this is the first time a former president has been indicted for attempting to overturn the results of an election.
Former President Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing regarding his actions after the 2020 election. Trump has called the indictment fake and has accused Special Counsel Jack Smith of being corrupt.
