Winder, GA – Four people were killed today in a school shooting in Georgia. Two unidentified students and teachers were killed and as many as 30 have been confirmed injured. Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith confirmed the suspect was a student at the school and acted alone. He surrendered immediately when confronted by law enforcement.
The director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Chris Hosey, said the suspect is being charged with murder as an adult. This was the third and deadliest shooting this year and the most deadly in Georgia’s history.
Reports from the New York Times say students initially thought the incident was a drill and once they heard the shots, started to hide and escape.
Both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump offered condolences today. Harris called this event “outrageous” and said students and parents shouldn’t be concerned about their safety at school.
“Our hearts are with the victims and loved ones of those affected by the tragic event in Winder,” Trump stated. “These cherished children were taken from us far too soon by a sick and deranged monster.”
President Biden also sent his condolences to the students, friends and families of the victims, saying “Jill and I are mourning the deaths of those whose lives were cut short due to more senseless gun violence and thinking of all of the survivors whose lives are forever changed.”
Biden also called for the passing of stricter gun laws and ban of assault weapons, saying “After decades of inaction, Republicans in Congress must finally say ‘enough is enough’ and work with Democrats to pass common-sense gun safety legislation. We must ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines once again,”
Reports have yet to finally confirm the exact number of injuries at this time.
