History was made on December 5, 2024, when the WNBA announced the team’s name and colors for their Expansion Team in Toronto, Canada. The newest addition to the WNBA family will be the Toronto Tempo.
The newest addition will be Canada’s first WNBA team in league history. The Tempo will be introduced to the league in 2026, becoming the fourteenth franchise to join the WNBA.
The president of the Tempo, Teresa Resch, was a former member of the Toronto Raptors before leaving this past March to join Kilmer Sports Ventures. Kilmer Sports Ventures is now the owner of this new WNBA franchise. In Resch’s first statement about the team, she said that the name was made specifically to represent the people of Canada.
“Tempo is pace. It’s speed. It’s a heartbeat. And it’s what you feel when you step into the streets of this city, and in the energy of the people who call Canada home,” said Resch in her first official statement with the team per Bleacher Report. “As Canada’s WNBA team, I know the Tempo will set our own pace, move at a championship cadence, and inspire people across this country.”
The Toronto Tempo will be the sixth major sports team in Toronto, joining the Blue Jays, Maple Leafs, Raptors, Toronto FC, and the Argonauts. The fans in Toronto are very supportive of their teams and for the fans that will be attending the Tempo’s games in the Coca-Cola Coliseum, this surely won’t be any different.
On top of the announcement of the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA also announced in September that the Portland Thorns will also be joining the league in 2026.
The WNBA family is getting bigger and with the addition of the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA is heading in the right direction with a very promising future.
