New York City, NY– On February 5, 2025 police were called to the East River in response to a suitcase found floating. A ferry captain called after spotting the suitcase by Governors Island and failing to fish it out of the river.
Police succeeded in fishing the luggage from the river at approximately 5:30 p.m. and upon opening it, found human remains. Authorities released that the remains included a man’s torso, which was zipped into a sleeping bag. No other body parts have been located yet.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner states that an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death and approximate how long the remains had been in the river.
The investigation is ongoing and the remains have yet to be identified.
