Jimmy Carter, the longest-living US President, passed away Sunday, December 29th, after a year in hospice care. He passed away at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he and his late wife Rosalynn spent most of their lives, as announced on X by the Carter Center.
Carter was known as a businessman, Naval officer, evangelist, politician, negotiator, author, woodworker, loving husband, and father. Taking office in the wake of the Watergate scandal and the Vietnam War, Carter won his 1976 ‘no-frills’ campaign promising to not deceive the American people, leading him to serve as President of the United States until 1981.
Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were widely known as humanitarians, working closely with Habitat for Humanity into their later years. The Carter Center was founded in 1982, a first-of-its-kind facility focused on international peace, public health, and human rights. Beginning in 1984, the Carters volunteered with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for those in need. He and his wife continued to volunteer, with Rosalynn working until she passed away. More than 4,300 homes are considered “Carter Homes.”
Carter was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2015, which led many to question his well-being while undergoing treatment. Treatment for his liver cancer went relatively well, but a metastasized brain tumor was later found in 2023 after he suffered a fall. Brain surgery and treatment led Carter to enter hospice in late 2023. Rosalynn Carter passed away in November 2023 from dementia. Her passing had many considering if Jimmy would pass shortly after from a broken heart, after 77 years of loving marriage.
Carter was seen most recently in November voting in the 2024 presidential election, a monumental moment for the late president. Now, reunited with Rosalynn, Jimmy Carter rests in the wake of his part in American history.
