Howard Stanley Beverly, also known Frankie Beverly, the soul and R&B icon who was the frontman and founder of the group Maze passed away Monday at 77 in California.
Beverly’s family released a statement on social media about his passing.
“Grieving the loss of a loved one is a deeply personal and emotional experience. During this time, we are navigating feelings of sorrow, reflection, and remembrance. We kindly ask for privacy and understanding, allowing us the space to grieve in our own way.
Beverly was born in Philadelphia. He was raised in the Germantown area of the city. He started singing gospel for his local church and eventually formed a band called “The Blenders”.
Beverly later opened up shows for Marvin Gaye. Gaye even encouraged them to change their name to Maze.
This opened the door for the group and they came out with hits like “Joy and Pain’, “Before I Let Go”, and “We Are One.”
Beverly was a staple for the black community as Beyonce sampled Beverly’s hit song “Before I Let Go.”. If you go to any cookout you will most likely hear a Frankie Beverly or Maze song.
Beverly and Maze received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Black Entertainment Television Awards in 2012.
No funeral arrangements have been made so far for Frankie Beverly.
