On the evening of October 25th, Robert Card, a former Army reservist, opened fire at a restaurant and bowling alley, killing 18 and injuring 13 in Lewiston, Maine. Several people were injured due to a stampede that happened following the gunshots.
A manhunt is underway for the 40-year-old man. The Canadian Border Patrol service also alerted its officers because Card is considered armed and dangerous.
Card was admitted to a mental health facility in July after commanders from the 304th Infantry Regiment thought he was acting erratic. After the commanders became concerned, they called the police to take him away to a mental health facility for his safety. It was revealed that he was also a firearms instructor and often heard voices in his head. He also has a long list of mental health issues that have not been disclosed. Robert Card also threatened to shoot up the National Guard base in Saco, which led to him being sent to a mental health facility.
Police Across Maine remain on high alert as they have a warrant for Card’s arrest. Authorities have also expanded the search area across all of southern Maine.
Lewiston is Maine’s second-largest city, and it’s right off of the I-95 corridor, so Law Enforcement has that area on lockdown as they look for the perpetrator of the largest mass shooting.
Lewiston and its surrounding towns have been ordered to shelter in place until they find the shooter. Local schools and businesses have also shut down out of caution. The local communities are in shock as this is rare for the region.
The FBI and ATF are both assisting local law enforcement agencies in the area. Law enforcement also said do not approach the suspect as he is armed and dangerous. There has been no motive declared for the attack.
