Murder charges have been announced against correctional officers in the death of Robert Brooks.
Robert Brookes was a 43-year-old inmate who was beaten to death by guards in Marcy, New York.
While serving his sentence for assault, Robert Brooks was brutally beaten to death by correctional officers. Body cam footage was released that showed the officers brutally beating and kicking Brooks.
There were six officers charged with murder and several other crimes after going to trial. Three other correctional officers were charged with manslaughter and a tenth officer was charged with evidence tampering due to attempting to clean the area where the attack happened. Of the 10 officers involved, one officer still needs to stand trial. Special Prosecutor and Onondaga County District Attorney William J. Fitzpatrick announced the charges on Thursday afternoon.
Gov. Kathy Hochul issued a statement about the incident and agreed with the murder charges being pressed.
“The brutal attack on Mr. Brooks was sickening, and I immediately moved to terminate the employment of those involved. Now, the perpetrators have been rightfully charged with murder and State Police are making arrests.”
All officers involved pleaded not guilty to the charges pressed against them. Nonetheless, all nine officers were proven guilty of all charges brought up against them.
As of now, there have been no further updates on the details of this case and there have been no comments made by the lawyers representing the officers at this time.
