Ohio has become the 24th state to legalize the recreational use of marijuana with the approval of 57 percent of voters.
The passage of Issue 2 will allow individuals 21 and older to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana and to grow the plant at their home. A 10 percent sales tax will be imposed on all marijuana purchases.
“Marijuana is no longer a controversial issue, Ohioans demonstrated this by State Issue 2 in a landslide. Ohioans are being extremely clear on the future they want for our state: adult-use marijuana legal and regulated,” Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Spokesman Tom Haren said.
Medical marijuana has been legal in Ohio since 2016 but some Republican lawmakers have opposed the idea of full-scale legalization. They have called for some changes to be made to the law such as a limit on amounts of THC which is the compound that gives marijuana its psychoactive properties.
“This statute was written by the marijuana industry and should not be treated as a cash grab for their cash crop at the expense of a state trying to emerge from the opioid epidemic,” Ohio’s Senate President Matt Huffman said in a statement.
As a citizen-initiated statute, lawmakers have the power to amend the law or even repeal it altogether. A complete repeal would be unlikely as it was passed by voters from both parties, and it would anger many representatives’ constituents.
Ohio’s marijuana legalization law is set to go into effect on December 7.
