Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has signed an executive order to hire federal workers that have been fired by the Trump administration.
In a public statement, Josh Shapiro said, “If they’re qualified and they want to serve Pennsylvanians, well, here me on this, we want you on our team… [The federal government] made dramatic cuts, cuts I think make us less safe and less healthy and less protected in the United States of America.”
According to Shapiro, there are 5,600 employment openings for nurses, civil engineers, and emergency workers in the commonwealth. Shapiro has also created a new website that will help compare current federal jobs to state government jobs that are available. On this website, you can explore new career opportunities and sign up to attend job fairs.
To help supplement jobs for these workers, Shapiro has announced that the Pennsylvania State Police will take away the college credit requirements for those who wish to serve as state troopers.
Pennsylvania is not the only state that has stepped in to aid these workers. The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development has been highlighting their unemployment and career services that can be used.
Wes Moore, Governor of Maryland, has also spoken out and expressed that he wanted to implement a plan similar to Shapiro’s.
More layoffs could be coming, as the Veterans Affairs department is not the only department facing employment cuts pushed by the Trump administration.
