The gunman who greeted sheriff’s deputies attempting to evict him with a storm of bullets has been killed. The shooter has been identified as 63-year-old William Hardison Sr.
The standoff began around 11 a.m. and lasted until 5:08 p.m. when the suspect was pronounced dead by Pittsburgh EMS. The incident forced UPMC Children’s Hospital, West Penn Hospital, and local schools to go into lockdown.
Local residents were ordered to shelter in place as numerous volleys of gunfire were exchanged throughout the day. The suspect downed three drones put up by law enforcement.
The Pittsburgh Police Department, Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, Allegheny County Police, SWAT, Pennsylvania State Police, the Attorney General’s Office, the ATF, and the FBI all responded to the scene of the standoff.
Hardison Sr. identified himself as a sovereign citizen, which means that he did not recognize the laws of the government as valid. He had a prior criminal record dating back to 2000.
Police gave the suspect over four and a half hours to surrender to no avail. The suspect’s son, William Hardison Jr. begged for his father to surrender. While speaking to Pittsburgh WTAE Action News he said, “Dad, please surrender. Please give up, you have children and grandchildren that love you dearly. Please stand down.”
Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey stated in regard to the standoff, “Pittsburgh, I ask for you to join us in prayer tonight for the entire community of Garfield, a peaceful neighborhood that was home to an unfortunate tragedy today. I want to thank all of our federal, state, and local law enforcement officials here today who worked to keep this neighborhood and our city safe. As a city, we are committed to caring for all those who have been harmed, and we will continue working over the next several days to connect this neighborhood to mental health and trauma support services.”
Pennsylvania State Police will handle the investigation moving forward.
