“It’s a hockey night in Pittsburgh!” A saying that is iconic in western Pennsylvania. On the ice, the Penguins have had nothing but success until recently. Sports Network Pittsburgh has announced some changes to their off-ice broadcasts.
Just a few days after acquiring the rights to the team, Fenway Sports Group has made sweeping changes to the booth. Bob Errey and Steve Mears are out. Erry has been in the booth for the entirety of Sidney Crosby’s career.
Taking over for Mears in the play-by-play role is a familiar voice, Josh Getzoff. Getzoff has risen to be a well-liked member of the fanbase, as his power-play goal call: “It’s PPG for PGH!” which has become a fan favorite.
Haley Hunter will join Getzoff, as Hunter spent last year as a team reporter for the New York Islanders. She also worked the Winter Olympics for NBC. Don’t worry Pens fans, Dan Potash isn’t going anywhere as he will continue in his role. So we will continue getting an “on again off again” relationship with Evgeni “Geno” Malkin.
This now leaves the question of where Mears will go. Don’t worry, you can still hear his voice on the Penguins radio network. The Murrysville native will join Phil Bourque in the booth. Paul Steigerwald and Brain Metzer will continue their roles for the pregame and postgame show, so not many changes for the year to come.
You won’t have to wait long to hear all these changes as the Penguins will take on the Senators on Oct 2 in the “Halifax Showdown” as Sidney Crosby returns to his home province for the first time as a pro.
