PITTSBURGH — The Steel City has been named among the top 10 safest and most affordable cities in America.

Coming in at number one is Grand Rapids, Michigan, with an average home price of $280,000 and crime rate of 18.38 percent.

The top 10 most affordable and safest cities to live in America:

  1. Grand Rapids, Michigan
  2. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  3. Port St. Lucie, Florida
  4. El Paso, Texas
  5. Syracuse, New York
  6. Hartford, Connecticut
  7. Fayetteville, Arkansas

Many young professionals are buying and flipping the Pittsburgh community’s homes for less than $150,000.

The City of Pittsburgh and neighboring towns went through economic hardships after steel mills shut down. However, Pittsburgh has seemed to take a turn for the best in the past 15 years. Many well-known tech biggies like Google and Uber chose Pittsburgh as one of their corporate centers, bringing profitable promise to the city. Crime rate plummeted from 2000-2014 by 24.8 percent, according to the FBI’s most recent data.

The high ranking in safety comes in light of the worst anti-Semitic mass shooting in U.S. history. In October 2018, 11 people were killed and several more were injured at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill. 46-year-old Robert Bowers allegedly opened fire on worshipers inside before surrendering to officers.
