In a statement on X Biden said, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
With Biden’s withdrawal, the Democrats will need to find their new presidential candidate. President Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the nominee for the Democrats.
Harris is the front-runner to take the presidential nomination. She received a nomination from President Biden. There are a few potential names to keep an eye on. Most notably the names are Gov. Gavin Newsome of California, Gov. J.B Pritzker of Illinois, and Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia.
The Democratic National Convention is set for Aug. 19-22 in Chicago, where the party will formally nominate a candidate.
