Butler, PA. – Former President Donald Trump was injured after shots rang out during his presidential campaign rally in Butler County Sunday evening. The 45th president was about 15 minutes into his speech before shots were fired, hitting him in the ear. Trump was taken to a local hospital before he was discharged later last night.
This was the first confirmed assassination attempt on a president since Ronald Regan in 1981.
The shooter, identified by the FBI as Thomas Matthew Crooks was killed, as well as 50-year-old bystander, Corey Comparator. Crooks was 20 years old and from Bethel Park, PA. Two others were injured and were taken to Allegheny County Hospital.
Trump said on social media last night, “I want to thank the United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response,” adding “Most importantly I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also the family of the person who was badly injured.”
President Biden also released a statement condemning the act of violence that took place yesterday, saying “There’s no place for this kind of violence in America.” Biden also said he spoke to Trump and reiterated his well wishes and prayers.
The FBI is currently leading the investigation into the incident. No motive has been determined at this time. Crooks was about 410 feet away according to CBS News, and fired 8 rounds from an assault rifle-like weapon.
Anyone with any information of any kind on the matter is encouraged by the FBI and Secret Service to reach out by contacting 1-800-CALL-FBI.
Trump is now heading into the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday with a united front and is expected to announce his vice president pick during his appearances there.
