Starting August 5, the RMU Campus Police will begin to wear body cameras while on patrol. The announcement came via email on August 3.
The email from RMU Police Chief Jeff James stated, “Body worn cameras have become a best practice for law enforcement. We value our community’s trust, and we view the cameras as one way to demonstrate our accountability. The cameras will also facilitate investigations and the preservation of evidence, which will support our efforts to provide the safest campus environment possible.”
The National Institute of Justice has listed several potential benefits of police officers wearing body cameras. These benefits include better transparency, increased civility, quicker resolution, corroborating evidence, and training opportunities.
Students will be able to see the cameras on the police uniforms as they move onto campus and meet with the officers.
