The state of Pennsylvania announced that it will give over 500 million in money to projects that need funding. Robert Morris is seeking ten million dollars to build a state-of-the-art arena holding 2500 people.
This arena will double the size of the Clearview Arena at the Island Sports Complex. The new arena will provide actual seating and give the only Division One college hockey program in Pittsburgh what it truly deserves.
The venue will also include premium seating to provide a new way to enjoy Colonials hockey. The arena will be on campus, but the precise site is to be determined. It will also involve new parking to be installed on campus. The location of this is unknown at this time.
The building will be 100,000 square feet and include enhanced training locker room facilities and offices. It will also offer top-tier amenities to youth and amateur players. It will be the center of hockey in an ever-growing market of college hockey.
Head of athletics Chris King said they are “actively exploring” the new arena. He also said, “This strategic initiative represents a blending of our pursuit of competitive excellence with our ongoing commitment to serving the needs of the greater community.”
Also touching on the new arena, he said, “The new arena would serve as a vital source of revenue, crucial for the long-term sustainability of our Division I ice hockey programs, whose resurgence has been fueled by fundraising support.”
The state funds would be through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, allowing the university to receive funds to help with the project. It would bring a brand new image to the university and help grow hockey in Pittsburgh.
The project will be completed by the summer of 2027, just in time for the upcoming hockey season for the Colonials for the 2027-28 season. The arena will provide a new look for the university and show that hockey is here to stay.
