Robert Morris University has announced today that two important places on campus have new names. Robert Morris Alumnus Russ Olsen (’82) made a benevolent gesture by making a multi-million dollar donation to the institution. Hopwood Hall and the Basement have unveiled their new names, as both areas are now named after the Olsen family.
The Olsen Family Basement is a dynamic space on the first floor of the Nicholson Center, and it’s a place for students to come and hang out or study. The area has recreational games like pool, ping pong, and air hockey. The Basement also has TVs and a conference room for many different things. There is a plaque just outside the entrance dedicated to Russ Olsen’s grandparents, Elsie and Clarence Olsen, for their impact on their family and community.
Olsen Hall, formerly known as Hopwood Hall, is a staple of almost every student’s academic experience at Robert Morris. The space holds classes and other events. This space was dedicated because of Russ Olsen’s loyalty and enthusiasm for education here at Robert Morris University.
This is not the first time that Mr. Olsen has made a generous donation to the University. He has supported RMU athletics as well as funding scholarships. He also made another multi-million dollar pledge, which led to the Elaine Boyd Library being named after his stepmother to honor her.
Olson’s commitment to Robert Morris University plays a huge part in many students’ academic and social life on campus, as students frequently use these areas. His philanthropic actions do not go unnoticed, but now his legacy will forever be appreciated by Robert Morris students and faculty.
