After a 30-plus-year career, Ron Cook has decided to retire from The Pittsburgh Post Gazette and 93.7 The Fan, he announced on Monday, February 5, 2024.
“I’ve been looking forward to this week for a long time. I’ve also been dreading it for a long time. … It’s just time,” Cook said. “I dread it because I’m leaving so much behind, but I’m looking forward to it because I’ve got so much ahead”
Cook had an amazing career covering events such as the Olympics, and every single Penguins Stanley Cup! For his final “Cook and Joe Show” the station went out on a high with guests such as Joe Namath, Joe Greene, Steve Blass, Billy Knight, John Calipari, Jim Render, Terry Francona, Vinny Richichi, and Tom McMillan.
On Monday former Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger called into the show he had a weekly segment for 8 years to say goodbye.
“I just wanted to say thank you for all the wonderful years I can say that these last few years I’ve listened as a fan” Cook then asked about retirement
“Buddy I can’t recommend it enough enjoy that beer on the beach and keep one cold for me”, Roethlisberger said
On a personal note, Cook was one of— if not my favorite Sports Reporters in Pittsburgh growing up. My dad, little brother, and I would listen to his show going to and from basketball. He was a major factor in my decision to enter the Sports Media field. Thank Joe for a wonderful career and covering everything under the sun, enjoy retirement!
