There is a new era of NBA reporting at ESPN. Shams Charania, former basketball reporter for The Athletic, announced on Oct 10, 2024, that he will be joining the “Worldwide Leader in Sports” as the new Senior NBA Insider.
Charania released a statement of his own free agency signing as the newest member of ESPN.
“I am honored to join ESPN as the company’s senior NBA insider,” said Charania on social media. “I can’t wait to be part of an incredible group of colleagues at ESPN and serve the sports audience worldwide.”
Charania, who has worked for Yahoo Sports and The Athletic, has broken a lot of NBA news over his time and has a lot of experience under his belt. Shams joined Yahoo Sports in 2015 as he covered the NBA until 2018 when he decided to work at The Athletic.
Shams shined at The Athletic as he broke NBA news for the company from 2018 to 2024. Today, he announced on X that he will be joining ESPN, leaving The Athletic after six years of service.
He replaces Adrian Wojnarowski, who retired from the sports media industry Sept 18, as he will now be the general manager for the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball program. Wojnarowski and Shams worked as colleagues at Yahoo Sports. During this time, Wojnarowski was a role model to Shams when they worked side by side at Yahoo Sports. Wojnarowski left for ESPN and the two became “rivals” as the media portrayed as they both raced to break NBA news faster than the other. Since Wojnarowski is stepping away from the sports media industry, Shams will now be the biggest NBA reporter for the upcoming season and the foreseeable future for the NBA.
To conclude, it is safe to say that ESPN won free agency this fall and the future for Shams is brighter than ever as he will be the new Senior NBA Insider for ESPN.
