The Pennsylvania State Police are questioning three high school students, all fifteen, concerning two pistols being found on Hempfield High School property. The officers kept the school on lockdown as they investigated the matter.
The incident started Monday morning when two students exchanged a handgun on the bus on the way to school. This exchange happened around 7:40 a.m. There was a secondary exchange in the school bathroom with a third student. Cliff Greenfield of the Pennsylvania state police stated that the police were dispatched to the school at 11:40 a.m. Students witnessed these exchanges, and those same students reported the issue.
Officers found the loaded handguns in the student’s backpacks. The students were allegedly in contact about this plan on Sunday. Officers said there was no reason to believe the students were planning an attack.
Precautions are now being taken to make sure the students are safe. School officials announced that the students will have to go through extra security checks, which include having to go through metal detectors.
The students are still being questioned and will be treated as juveniles instead of adults.
