On Tuesday, President Donald Trump revealed that the U.S. would sell a “gold card” to wealthy foreigners in exchange for citizenship. This card would cost $5 million USD.
President Trump told the press, “We’re going to be selling a gold card, You have a green card. This is a gold card. We’re going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million and that’s going to give you green card privileges, plus its going to be a route to citizenship.”
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stands by President Trump and believes this will be a good move for the United States. This card will be replacing the government’s EB-5 immigrant investor visa program. This program allows for foreign investors to donate money to create jobs and pay for visas for immigrants in the United States.
President Trump believes that this ‘gold card’ will bring wealthy foreigners into the country. “They’ll be wealthy and they’ll be successful and they’ll be spending a lot of money and paying a lot of taxes and employing a lot of people, and we think it is going to be extremely successful.”
The United States will not be the only country with a “gold card.” Other countries such as the United Kingdom, Spain, Greece, and Canada also have a card that you can purchase that leads to citizenship.
Despite the United States not being the only country to do this, President Trump claims that “No other country can do this because people don’t want to go to other countries. They want to come here.”
President Trump and Howard Lutnick ensured that people would go through a thorough background check before being granted one of these cards. Trump also stated that there would most likely be no restriction on the countries people are coming from, but rather the people themselves.
President Trump expects these cards to be available in the next two weeks.
