With war raging in the Southern Levant, a government spending deadline looms as the House remains paralyzed due to the ousting of Kevin McCarthy. As of Thursday night, Steve Scalise has withdrawn from the House speaker race due to a lack of support from his fellow Republicans.
Scalise would not be able to secure 217 majority votes to win the nomination. Momentum swung away from Scalise as the days went on because some Republicans said they would not vote for him, so he decided to drop out.
Scalise has indicated that he will continue as House Majority leader. Steve Scalise also wouldn’t disclose who he would vote for when asked which candidate he would support.
Scalise narrowly beat Jim Jordan for the speaker bid, and less than two days after he won the bid, he dropped out of the running for Speaker of the House. This has opened up the floor for Jim Jordan, who is endorsed by former president, Donald Trump. Many other Republicans have also encouraged Jim Jordan to run again, and he did.
Jim Jordan, The chairman of the Judiciary Committee, defeated the Representative from Georgia, Austin Scott. He won the vote 124 to 81 and is now the nominee for Speaker.
The House closed for the weekend without a Speaker, but they will adjourn again this week to hopefully vote on a new speaker. Meanwhile, some representatives think they should grant interim speaker Patrick Mchenry more power while the leadership crisis continues.
