An “unfounded” threat to a Pittsburgh synagogue has security raised in the surrounding area. The Pittsburgh police do not believe the threat is credible at this time and have not released the name of the synagogue for safety reasons.
The threats came a month after the 5th anniversary of the Tree of Life synagogue shooting. The gunman, who shot and killed 11 worshipers, was sentenced to death earlier this year.
The Pittsburgh police have secured every synagogue in the area and will remain a presence for the immediate future. Police found an IP address in an investigation of the threat and have not released any further information.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh made a Facebook post on Wednesday that they have reported more antisemitic incidents in the last month than in any month prior. Many of these threats have risen after the Israel-Hamas war. They urged people to say something if they see something. Rates of antisemitic incidents rose 36% in the United States in 2022 and have continually risen within 2023.
