Last week, on January 9, the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank announced its need for volunteers because of an increase in people who need assistance due to the economy.
This comes after what the Food Bank says is “a dip in the number of volunteers after the holidays,” according to Maria Montaro, the manager of Corporate and Community Giving.
Because of the winter weather and changing economic fields, volunteers and extra help are always needed, but currently, the Food Bank sits about 75 people short of the 500 that are wanted weekly to help feed the Pittsburgh area.
Currently, there are positions open in every county, and those who are interested can sign up for 3 to 4-hour shifts. You can expect to prepare food for distribution, bag items or weigh food, help register families to get food, and much more.
If you’re looking to volunteer and help a great cause, the only requirement is to be over 18, and you can find out more or sign up at pittsburghfoodbank.org/volunteer.
You can also email the volunteering department at [email protected] if you want to volunteer.
