Brett’s golden goal pushes Colonials over SPU, 2-1
September 4, 2015
Friday’s game against Saint Peters University was no walk in the park for the Colonials.
After a very physical first half, the Colonials were down 1-0; two games into the season, this was the first time they had trailed. Even though it was the first time, it was only the first half and the team seemed confident that their deficit wouldn’t last for long.
As they took the field in the second half it was clear that Robert Morris was more aggressive in hopes to tie the game.
In the 59th minute, all the hard effort was rewarded for the Colonials as star forward Neco Brett shook the goalkeeper to set up a beautiful assist to freshman forward Lucas Puntillo. This was Puntillo’s first collegiate goal. “I was lucky to be trailing and finish it off,” he said. “It was nice to break the ice.”
Head coach Bill Denniston feels very confident in Puntillo’s potential. “He’s going to be a very good player, he’s quick, he’s clever, can shoot with both feet, and shoots the ball better than anyone on our team.” That goal tied the game up, and the score remained the same as time expired.
Overtime was a miracle in itself, considering that the game winning goal was scored in less than a minute.
About 25 seconds into over time, Puntillo tried his luck again shooting a long-range drive to the center of the box. In his shot attempt, the ball was deflected and star forward Brett was able to chest bump the ball into the left post. The game winning goal makes five on the season for Brett.
Scoring is nothing new to Brett. He scored four goals last week against Cleveland State and also led the nation in scoring in the 2014 season. The Colonials offense this year looks dynamic, and Puntillo’s success shows that the team does not have to solely rely on Brett to score goals.
Freshman from Trinidad and Tobago, Keane Mclvor, did not play this game but was also a tremendous help in the offense. Between Brett, Puntillo and Mclvor, the goals should be a plenty for RMU.
Coach Denniston is also excited for the trio saying, “The three of them work so well together, I’m looking forward to it.” The Colonials take on Eastern Illinois on Sunday, completing their two game home stretch and hoping to improve to 4-0 on the season.
