The RMU women’s hockey season capped off their first season back from the revival of the program on Sunday in Mercyhurst. The team’s success was acknowledged when the CHA named three members of the Colonials as finalists for individual awards.

Freshman Alaina Giampietro was named finalist for the Nicole Hensley Rookie of the Year Award. Giampietro led NCAA freshman with 19 goals and tied seventh in the CHA with 31 points and led the team in both categories. She also led the team in shots and second in the conference with 189.

Over the course of the season Giampietro won CHA Rookie of the Week four times, eventually being named to the CHA All-Rookie and All-CHA Second Team and named HCA Rookie of the Year Watch List earlier this month.

Goaltender Maggie Hatch is one of the finalists for the Brianne McLaughlin Goaltender of the Year Award, named in honor of former Colonial goaltender and three-time All-CHA honoree Brianne McLaughlin.

Hatch led the CHA in saves and fourth in the conference with a .922 save percentage and fifth-best in the conference with a 3.07 goals against average. She has had 16 games with 30+ saves, eight games with 40+ saves and a career-high 50 save performance against Minnesota State in November. She also collected her first career shutout in Game 1 of the CHA Semifinals at Mercyhurst.

With his first year as head coach, Logan Bittle was named a Coach of the Year finalist. He led the team to a 15-19-1 record with a 11-8-1 record in conference play, securing a spot in the CHA Playoffs once again. The RMU alum was behind the bench upsetting ranked Penn State on home ice, the first time beating the Nittany Lions since 2020.

The winners will be announced Feb. 29.

While the Colonials’ season may be over, the future is most certainly bright for this program, attempting to return to the NCAA Tournament again.
