Robert Morris (1-3-2) faced off against MAC opponent Akron (3-0-2) in a non-conference game on a beautiful Thursday afternoon.
The Colonials came into this game on the back three straight defeats and winless in their last four overall. Looking for a turn around, RMU came out strong and put the pressure on early, but in the end the teams were too even, and the final score would be 0-0.
Still in the early parts of the season, the Colonials are looking for strong performances and the results will follow. While catching up with Head Coach Michelle Rick after the game, she had some thoughts about her team’s performance.
“It’s bittersweet for us because we are moving in the right direction, but ultimately at the end of the day we didn’t get the result that we wanted. We are after performance not the result, but the result makes it worthwhile in the end.”
RMU ended the game with nine shots overall with three of them being on target, there were scoring chances to be had but a lack of composure in the final third resulted in the Colonial offensive struggles.
Coach Rick was able to talk about what she thought about the scoring chances after the game
“Just a little bit of lack of composure and nerves at the end of the day when we got in and around the final third, now we are getting there so that is a positive, now what’s our mentality like, what’s our technique like when we are in those high pressure moments.”
Set pieces are something to keep your eye on for the Colonials down the road. RMU looked most dangerous either coming from a corner or from a free kick outside the box. There were chances to be had and good scoring chances too, but no one was able to get on them at the end of the day.
Set pieces are going to be key for the Colonials moving forward and coach Rick had some thoughts about her team’s technique going about them.
“It is something we are trying to take steps forward in, trying to organize things and be a little more detailed with the way that we prepare set pieces. Every time we get in the final third, we want to get something out of it.”
The Colonials controlled the majority of the play for 60 to 70 minutes of the game, but there were times where Akron would become dangerous and get their scoring chances. RMU had a strong defensive performance to where they would shut down any Akron attack.
“I think defensively we have really progressed as a team, credit to the girls they have bought into what we have asked, the communication and the ability to solve problems defensively in game has increased exponentially since we have got here” coach Rick said.
Robert Morris will return to the field Sunday, Sept 8, to face off against Dartmouth with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
