MOON TOWNSHIP– Robert Morris (1-2-1) welcomed Mercyhurst (2-3) to the North Athletic Complex for the first ever meeting between these two programs.
The Colonials were coming off of their first win of this season last Wednesday after taking down Saint Francis 2-1.
It was not meant to be for the Colonials today as they would fall in the first ever meeting against the Lakers by a score of 1-0.
In what would turn out to be a hard-fought game the Lakers started fast, getting the only goal of the game inside the first five minutes, coming off of a fluky play where the ball would bounce around the six-yard box, off the post, and ended up right at the feet of Lakers forward, Riley Kutschbach, giving them the early lead.
“You don’t want to start a game that way,” Potter said. “It’s really important to score the first goal. It obviously gives you a better chance to win, the goal itself was kind of a fluke freak thing. We try to keep the guys calm and settled and try to approach the game in a similar way”.
With the Colonials conceding so early, it gave them plenty of time to bounce back and get into this game. A big strength for RMU would be the play off set pieces. The Colonials came close twice of the set plays, one resulting in a save from lakers keeper, Danilo Wilson.
“We created a number of set pieces,” Potter said, adding, “A lot of those came through transition moments. I thought the delivery today was good, it just didn’t bounce our way in the box.”
Throughout the game, Robert Morris would tally up 14 shots, 7 of which forced saves. Lucas Barasoee lead the team with all three of his shots going on frame.
As the game went on, the Colonials would leave more gaps in the midfield, making it easier for the Lakers to pass around them and get scoring oppertunities.
“I don’t think they (midfielders) started the game well enough, we had to get tighter to their midfielders,” Potter said. “We had a lot of guys go down with injuries and that really changed who was playing in midfield, we had to move guys to different roles pretty frequently”.
In the last 10 Minutes the Colonials would get a burst of energy, producing scoring chances and leading to another 3 shots on goal. Catching up with coach Potter after the game he had some thoughts on how his team played the last three minutes.
“Guys are fighting till the end. We just have to finish. We had a lot of opportunities to draw the game late, we just have to finish the chances”.
The Colonials will be back in action this Saturday for their first Horizon League game of the year when they face Northern Kentucky at the North Athletic Complex with kickoff set for noon.
