MOON TOWNSHIP– Robert Morris (0-2) was back at Joe Walton Stadium for the home opener of the 2024 season. To break open the start of the home portion of the schedule RMU welcomed the Edinboro Fighting Scots (1-1).
The Fighting Scots, who are a D-II school, welcomed the challenge and brought it to RMU. The Colonials started the game slow and ended the game slow as the Fighting Scots would walk away with a 23-21 win over the Colonials.
In the first quarter, RMU would only have one possession which would lead to an early 7-0 lead for Edinboro. In this game the Colonials would find themselves in a hole with a 14-0 deficit in the second quarter.
Robert Morris would get one on the board with a passing touchdown from Anthony Chiccitt to Chaz Middleton. The two players would connect for an eight yard touchdown to get seven points on the board.
On the first play on the next drive for the Fighting Scots, Rob Carter Jr would get his second interception of the young season.
The Colonials would end up scoring on the next play with a 15 yard touchdown run from Tyvon Edmonds Jr. to tie the game up at 14 right before halftime. The Colonials who only had one possession in the first quarter had now tied the game on three plays right before halftime.
To Start the second half the Colonials offense was again non-existent making the defense remain on the field locker than they should be. Edinboro would once again take the lead in the third quarter to make it 21-14.
To start the fourth quarter the Colonials would finally get some offense going marching down the field 66 yards on 9 plays and to cap it off DJ Moyer would run it in for a 12 yard running touchdown.
With a tie game in the fourth the Fighting Scots would punt the ball away and down it on the Colonials 1 yard line. With the whole field to go Anthony Chiccitt would lose control of the ball in the endzone which would result in a safety for RMU. This would give the Fighting Scots a 23-21 lead.
With five minutes left in the game the Colonials would march down the field stringing together a nice drive and a couple of first downs. With a little over two minutes left in the game the Colonials were faced with a fourth and one at the Edinboro 29 yard line. This would be the play of the game as the Colonials would go for it and get stuffed at the line of scrimmage resulting in a turnover on downs and seal the game for the Fighting Scots.
Final stats include Anthony Chiccitt throwing for 111 yards and a touchdown. The leading rusher for the Colonials was Edmonds Jr for 67 yards and a touchdown. Noah Robinson would contribute 73 yards receiving.
On the defensive side of the ball, Lucas Lambert would contribute 2.5 sacks. Jamar Shegog and Dee Pierce both lead the team in total tackles with 11, and Rob Carter Jr had another interception to bring his total to two on the year.
Robert Morris will be back in action next Saturday when they face off against Mercyhurst in an NEC conference game. This will be RMU’s first NEC game since 2019. Kickoff is set for noon.
