Robert Morris Volleyball (3-1) was back at the UPMC Events Center for the home opener of the 2024 season. The Colonials welcomed Coppin State (2-3) for game one of the Chick Fil-A Robinson Classic.
The Colonials in the home opener would defeat the Eagles in a five set thriller. RMU would go up early with a two set to none lead by scores of 25-15, and 25-11.
The Eagles after the set break would show some signs of life taking sets three and four to force a fifth set in game one.
In the end, the Colonials would take the match in five sets with some adversity by the end of it. The fifth set would be close by a final score of 15-13.
Throughout the season a team will face adversity so it is good that RMU can get some practice and prepare for the conference portion of the schedule.
“We went up big in that second set and we got a little bit comfortable, we need to be able to identify the fact that we just can’t relax. When things were going really well I think we took our foot off the gas a little bit,” head coach Danny Doherty said. “We just keep processing and keep learning through preseason and setting us up for the Horizon League.”
RMU was able to capitalize on the Coppin State errors, the Eagles would make 35 errors throughout the match compared to the 17 that RMU made. The Colonials did well in making them pay for them.
Coach Doherty was able to speak on his team’s ability to capitalize on those errors.
“A lot of it is how we set up, if we have a strong block and a good defense they are going to make those errors because they are trying to hit around our block. I think we did a phenomenal job, 14 blocks in five sets. We just keep the pressure on”.
The net front presence for the Colonials was strong as they were able to pick up 14 blocks in the five set matchup. Defense played a role in victory this afternoon.
“They are rockstars,” Doherty said. “Everyone on this team is a rockstar, but the block has been dynamic this year. I credit a lot of what our staff does in preparing them and understanding the blocking calls in the moves. We have had a fantastic start in blocking”.
Robert Morris will return to the court later this evening to take on Niagara in game two of the Chick Fil-A Robinson Classic, First serve is set for 6 p.m.
