MOON TOWNSHIP– Robert Morris (18-18, 8-5 Horizon) had the rubber match of a three-game series against the Mastodons of Purdue Fort Wayne (16-21, 8-6 Horizon) in which the Colonials took the rubber match to win the series by a score of 7-2.

The Colonials had a big fourth inning as they mustered four runs on four hits and two Mastodon errors. Head coach Jexx Varner had this to say about that fourth inning in which it broke out the game

“We just have to do our jobs. We have a team that is full of depth and I can trust any of our players in that dugout…we know who we are and we know how we play and we just have to do our jobs especially with the Horizon League being so tight.” Varner said.

Madison DeVault got the ball for the Colonials, dominating the Mastodons with a masterful line of six innings pitched, five hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts. Varner talked about DeVault’s performance.

“She dominated,” Varner said. “Normally I would allow her to go back in there and finish the game but those last two batters fouled off so many pitches and I think it was thirty pitches let alone. She was just exhausted but it was a great job here and that shows how much trust we have in our pitching staff.”

DeVault was downright dominant in this game. She effectively used her changeup and sweeping curve to get batters out and she used her fastball to perfection painting corners left and right.

The Colonials were able to take this with the small style they liked to use and have used all season. The Colonials have been able to put runs on the board by just simply being patient at the plate and putting the ball in play and that was the case today as the Colonials put the ball in play and made magic on the bases.

However, the Colonials did run themselves out of a couple of opportunities early but aggressiveness led to runs on the base paths as the Mastodons through the ball around a lot today. The Mastodon’s defense today was a little sloppy today as they had a lot of errors in today’s game.

One play, in particular, was a fly ball to shallow right field that fell between the second basemen and the right fielder which lead to two Colonial runs.

The Mastodons tried to rally late but it was to no avail as the Colonials would shut the door on the late rally by Purdue Fort Wayne. They were able to put up two runs in the seventh inning but the comeback just came up short.

The Colonials will travel to St. Francis to take on the Red Flash in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday and then will head to Indianapolis to take on IUPUI in a three-game Horizon League tilt over next weekend. That series against IUPUI will be a big series as they were able to get two games against Youngstown State.
