The Robert Morris Field Hockey team took a record of 1-1 record from last weekend’s round robin play by losing to Villanova 2-0 and then defeating Radford 2-0. A star emerged from the weekend and it was Jess Martin-Brown, freshman-forward, scoring two goals against the Highlanders of Radford on Sunday in her first action all season.
“Well with just mostly what we have been practicing, I was just happy to get my stick on the ball to score the goals,” said Martin-Brown.
Along with winning the Student-Athlete of the week award, she was also named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week award due to her exceptional play. The win gained confidence for the young team and Martin-Brown believes work is still in progress.
“I think we linked up well, but we have a lot of things to work on. Our communication is getting better as we are working well together,” said the Mount Gambrier, Australia native.
The Colonials now embark on a nine-game road trip which begins with a trip to Louisville, Ky. to play neutral site games against Appalachian State and Saint Louis on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Martin-Brown feels as if the road trip will be a bonding experience that will enhance their chemistry over the next month.
“We’re very excited. A lot of us, especially the Australians, are excited to get back onto AstroTurf. We’re just excited to get on the road together and getting to know one another better.”
