McKenzie earns Division I Rookie of the Week honors.
Field hockey freshman Erin McKenzie accomplished a rare feat when she earned the Synapse Sports/WomensFieldHockey.com Division I Rookie of the Week award.
She was previously named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week after leading the Colonials to two shutouts and three overall wins over the weekend.
Her three-game weekend sweep moves McKenzie’s win total to five on the year. With the fifth win, she ties Stephanie Seeley for Robert Morris’ single-season win record.
McKenzie started her weekend with a 1-0 overtime shutout win against No. 15 Ohio. This win was the first win ever against a nationally ranked team, and it was also the first shutout of McKenzie’s career.
Over the course of the weekend, McKenzie made 14 saves and obtained another win on Saturday during the team’s 3-2 overtime win over Lindenwood. From there, she went on to make another four saves during the Colonials 1-0 victory over Liberty for her second career shutout in only three days.
Colonials set program record for win
The field hockey program set a new record for wins with their sixth win of the year in their game at Appalachian State.
Freshman Jamie Hartley, scored two goals in the game including the game winning goal. Junior Paige Neat claimed her first victory of the season in the Colonials 4-3 win after she stopped four shots.
This win by the Colonials topped the program’s previous record of five wins that they set back in 2008.
The Colonials will return to action with a West Coast road trip next weekend, traveling to nationally ranked Stanford and then Pacific.
