NEVILLE TOWNSHIP– In what was a historic day in Robert Morris’ hockey history, the women’s hockey team is making a statement that they were for real.
For the second time in as many games, the Colonials had six goals over the Saint Anselm Hawks securing the sweep in a 6-4 win Saturday.
“I think we have a lot of talent,” Head Coach Logan Bittle said. “We’re just learning together. We have the opportunity to test ourselves and in the third period. In the second and third, I told the team that we hadn’t had a lead going into the third period, or a big one at that. We’ve got to learn to put teams away, and we’ve got some work to do there. The fact that they put themselves in a position to have that lead is spectacular. But, I think if you watch, we got a lot of talent.”
On Saturday, the Colonials scored four goals in the third period, and on Sunday they scored five in the second. Coach Bittle preached that the third period has been the team’s strong suit but today was not the case.
“It’s funny because our third periods have been our best all year,” Coach Bittle said. “This time, it was a second period, followed by probably our worst period of the year. So it’s strange. Our highs are very, very high. Our talent level is very great. Today, it was unbelievable. But when we are at our lows, when we get into those valleys, they’re too low. So we’re just trying to get that value up a little bit closer to our highs. When we see that high versus the low, it was that second period, and that second period was probably the most skill you’ve seen at Robert Morris in a long time.”
The Colonial chemistry was firing on all cylinders with six goals on ten assists. Madison Primeau had the lone Colonial goal in the first period, and in the second it was a show by Janelle Evans, Courtney Hall, Madison Giannone, and Alaina Giampietro.
Captains Wasyn Rice and Allyson Hebert have contributed to the success of the puck movement with such a new group.
“[Our chemistry] has grown so quick and so fast for a bunch of new girls to join together,” Hebert said. “Our leadership group is definitely helping us all communicate and help us grow together. We are all buying in and growing together. So I think we’re just using that. We’ve obviously all come together pretty quick, but it feels like we’ve been playing with each other for a while.”
“We have been taking from each player what they’ve learned and adapting it into our game,” Rice said. “We’ve been continuing to grow off what everyone’s pulling in together. So we’ve continued to be all as one, but helping each other learn off each other as well.”
The Colonials now ride a three-game winning streak and will travel to Princeton for a two-game series on Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14.
