#FormerColonialWatch: Alex Tonge signs with Wheeling Nailers
November 11, 2020
WHEELING, W. Va.– Former Robert Morris men’s hockey player Alex Tonge will join the growing list of former Colonials players who have signed with the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL throughout the years.
On Monday, the Nailers announced via their website that they signed Tonge, which makes him the 20th player to sign with the club in the 2020 offseason.
In a statement on the Nailers website, Tonge said it was a simple decision to join the Nailers.
“Wheeling had interest in me, and it was an easy call, because I love what they’ve been doing with the organization,” Tonge said. “I pride myself on being offensive and being creative when I make plays.”
Before joining Wheeling, Tonge skated for three different squads last season, including the Florida Everblades, Adirondack Thunder, and Norfolk Admirals. He spent his last 20 games with Norfolk, where he posted nine goals and seven assists for 16 points.
During his time at Robert Morris, Tonge recorded 138 points from 2015-19, which ties him with the fourth-most points in Colonials history. His 56 goals rank sixth all-time in men’s hockey team history.
Tonge joins 2020 graduate Luke Lynch, who signed with Wheeling back in July. Other former Colonials that have donned a Nailers jersey include Cody Wydo, who played with the Nailers from 2015-18, Daniel Leavens, who skated with the team in 2018, and Zac Lynch, who played for the club during the 2018-19 season.
Tonge and Lynch will look to make their Nailers debut on December 12th when the team takes on the Indy Fuel at Wesbanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia.
