*EDITOR’S NOTE: Opinions are of the writer’s own and do not represent Colonial Sports Network as a whole.
We are about midway through conference play for the RMU men’s basketball squad, and they have had their ups and downs this season. The Colonials have had a variety of opponents, making it a good mixture of competition for the season.
Now that it is the campaign’s midpoint let’s break down how the Colonials have done so far based on my opinion of the team. We will break down their grades for offense, defense, and special teams. Special teams mean free throws, ball movement, away-from-the-ball movement, and communication on the court.
OFFENSE (C+)
First, let’s take a look at the offense. The offense on this team can either be one of the best in the Horizon League or, at times, look stagnant. It is hard to give over a B+ for the offense, but it is free-flowing and fun to watch when they are on. However, when they struggle, it looks like a D-rated offense.
For instance, the Colonials could have a game like they did against Detroit Mercy and match them bucket for bucket, but then they have games against Youngstown State when they put 57 points against them. It can vary from game to game.
DEFENSE (B-)
As for the defense, I like how the Colonials have played defense this year. Their major flaw, however, is rebounding. But what I have liked about this team is how scrappy they are on defense. They dive for loose balls, get in players’ faces, and do not give easy buckets.
But with the rebounding issue that the Colonials have, it is tough to grade this defense. I like how scrappy the team is on defense, but rebounding is a more significant issue.
SPECIAL TEAMS (B)
Now, onto special teams. I love how much heart this team plays with seeing the bench react to a challenging play, the team going for loose balls, playing tough every game, and getting to the line for free throws. This grade would be better if they covert at the charity stripe. They are converting just 71%, which is the middle of the pack in the Horizon League.
OVERALL GRADE (B-)
This team has much more potential and is starting to put it together. It is right there for them, and I hope they can do it.
The Colonials will look to finish the season strong as they will be on the road for their next two games in Michigan, first tonight against Oakland and then against the hapless Detroit Mercy on Saturday.
