The Robert Morris Colonials have lost another star to the transfer portal.
Horizon League Player of the Year and All-Horizon League First Team member, Alvaro Folgueiras, has entered the transfer portal, his agent told ESPN Tuesday.
He announced his thank you in a statement to the Colonial fans on his Instagram.
“I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude,” he wrote. “It’s been an honor to wear this jersey and be part of this incredible journey. Together, we’ve made history. This season has been built on unforgettable memories. I want to thank Coach Toole, all my teammates and the entire Robert Morris University program. I will be a Colonial Crazy forever.”
The sophomore from Spain is the third player with an intention to transfer in two days, with Amarion Dickerson and Justice Williams also entering the portal on Monday.
In this day in age of NIL, it seems as if these departures were inevitable as mid-majors have been on the short end of the stick in terms of having talented players on their roster and leaving when their stock is high, then to leave for a power program after a short time.
Folgueiras was one of the key pieces in the Colonials’ Horizon League Championship campaign. The sophomore averaged 14.1 points and 9.1 rebounds while also shooting a 54.8% field goal percentage.
Following their loss to Alabama in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Folgueiras gave thanks to head coach Andy Toole for trusting in him, just a ‘skinny kid from Spain’ who took on a big role at just 19 years old.
“I didn’t have any question about [Coach Toole] being the leader of the program these two years long,” Folgueiras said. “It doesn’t matter if we were winning or losing. I just want to [give] thanks to Coach Toole to give me this chance, being a sophomore. He trusted me from the beginning. I just want to thank him because he’s the face of our team. He’s the face of this successful team.”
